In my last post I wrote about facility owners that recognize the importance of timely payment to keep costs as low as possible. If you are a service provider, contractor, or vendor, here is what you can do to find and involve yourself with these kinds of organizations.
- If you work with an owner organization that is using a construction project management system, you should inquire about any payment approval capabilities. Often times, these systems have the capability, but it’s just not being used. Simply asking the question tells the owner that you are ‘leading edge’ and positions you in a positive light.
- If you are given the opportunity to participate with the owner in a construction software selection process, or if your opinion is considered, take the opportunity to ‘lobby’ for this capability (again, many systems have it) as a way to promote adoption. The owner will be looking for ways to promote software adoption and will be willing to consider suggestions that achieve that goal.
- If an owner requires that you use an electronic system, embrace it. It’s an opportunity for you to differentiate yourself – to really stand out – as an organization that is not only willing to try something new, but that embraces the opportunity to improve the process for the owner as well as yourself.
As more owners adopt technology to streamline their capital project planning, design, procurement and construction processes, they look for vendors and partners that are willing participants. If you seek out these kinds of owners – they in turn will seek you out – and one of the benefits might be getting paid faster!
