"Doing More with Less" - Change in the Industry and Current Economic Environment

We recently had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Mark Bridgers, Consultant with FMI Management, as a presenter at e-Builder's User & Technology Conference. Mark's presentation focused on the FMI/CMAA 11th Annual Owners Survey. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this research, it's an annual study that provides a gauge for different industry trends and metrics, and presents the reader with a fairly accurate pulse of the construction industry.
This year's survey focused on understanding the fundamental changes that the recession has brought about for companies still actively building. Over 300 owners responded to this year's survey, an increase over previous years. Some of these respondents provided commentary on what they perceive as ongoing industry trends under the current economic environment:
“Owner organizations have downsized too much and cannot adequately staff significant project workloads.”

“The industry is trying to do more with less.”

“Downsizing has become the order of the day.”

“All parties involved in capital projects, from owner to suppliers, have reduced workforce [size] and are short of resources.”

“Large cuts in capital program spending by owners have resulted in significant purging of construction industry providers…”

“Both design and CM firms have reduced staff.”

I think these comments support what we're also hearing from organizations literally "trying to do more with less". These organizations are conciously looking to construction management software to offset the increased workload that a smaller workforce must manage, while still trying to deliver projects on time and on budget.
The survey has a lot more information that I could cover in several blog posts, so I invite you to download a copy at the following link:
